TEXT: Various Proverbs About Pride

MESSAGE: “What To Do About Pride”

——————————————————–

As we look through today’s text, we see that making wise decisions requires dealing with our pride.

Question for today:  What can I do to identify and deal with the sin of pride in my life?

         1. What is Pride?

Proverbs 11:12

Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.

“Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. If everyone else became equally rich, or clever, or good-looking there would be nothing to be proud about. It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest.” – CS Lewis, Mere Christianity

Proverbs 15:25

The Lord tears down the house of the proud, but he sets the widow’s boundary stones in place.

“It was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.” – CS Lewis, Mere Christianity

        2. What does pride do?

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 13:10

Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 21:4

Haughty eyes and a proud heart— the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.

Proverbs 28:26

Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

Proverbs 16:5

The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Proverbs 15:25

The Lord tears down the house of the proud, but he sets the widow’s boundary stones in place.

Proverbs 16:19

Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.

Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.
