MESSAGE: It’s All About Jesus

“Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” — Psalm 80:19
TEXT: Acts 3:11-26
  1. A Shocking Reality (v. 14-15a)
But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life…”
“‘You’ is emphatic and charges the Jewish crowd with responsibility…The result of this opposition was that they denied and slew God’s righteous and Holy One, while preferring that a murderer be released in his place.”
— Darrell Bock
“A Guntner Rutenborn play, The Sign of Jonah, asks the question and draws both the cast and the audience into the answer. (For them) No one is really to blame. A storm trooper merely followed orders. An industrialist merely kept up production. A citizen simply did not become involved. Yet in defending their own innocence each of the accused becomes an accuser. All are guilty. Some are guilty by words; others by silence. Some by what they did; others by what they did not. And suddenly the accused accusers all take up another cry. “We are to blame, yes, but we are not the most to blame. The real blame belongs much higher. God is to blame! God must go to trial!”  Edmund Clowney
  1. A Surprising Hope (v. 15b-16)
“…whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.”
“In light of these serious charges, we must ask whether there is any hope for such wicked people. The answer is yes! In the center of this passage about the glory of Christ and the gravity of sin, Peter offers amazing gospel hope to everyone.” — Tony Merida
And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.” — 1 Corinthians 15:14-19
And without faith it is impossible to please God…” — Hebrews 11:6
  1. A Secure Promise (v. 17-18)
“And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.
