Praying in Praise 5.3.20 SERIES: Praying The Psalms

SERIES: Praying the Psalms

TEXT: Psalms 33

MESSAGE: “Praying in Praise”

——————————————————–

TEXT: Psalms 33:1-22

As we look through today’s text, we see that in every season, God is worthy of our praise and worship because of who He is and because of what He does and He is worthy of our response in praise.

Question for today:  How can I praise God both when circumstances are good and also when they are not what I had planned?

Psalm 61

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

Psalms 22:1a

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Psalms 22:16-18

For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

  • He is worthy of our praise because of who He is.

Psalm 89:7-8

In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

Psalm 33:1

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

Psalm 33:6-9

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Psalm 33:10-11

The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.  But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

  • He is worthy because of what he does.

Psalm 33:13-14

From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth.

Psalms 33:15

he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.

V. 16-19

16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. 18 But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, 19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

  • He is Worthy of our response in praise.
      • V. 1-5
        • Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; Praise is becoming to the upright.  Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;  Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.  Sing to Him a new song;  Play skillfully with a shout of joy.  For the word of the Lord is upright,  And all His work is done in faithfulness.  He loves righteousness and justice;  The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.

Pslam 33:20-22

20 We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. 21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name  22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.

Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

1 John 5:13-14

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Psalms 1:6

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
