MESSAGE: Why Work-Ethic Matters
——————————————————
“Most of what Jesus said and did took place in a secular workplace… Work doesn’t take us away from God; it continues the work of God. God comes into view on the first page of our scriptures as a worker. Once we identify God in his workplace working, it isn’t long before we find ourselves in our workplaces working in the name of God.” – Eugene Peterson
“…What does the LORD require of you…” – Micah 6:8
Micah’s response: “…to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Q: What does God teach us about our ethic for work? We are encouraged to…(1. Consider the ant 2. Learn its ways 3. Value your time)
  1. Consider the ant (v. 6)
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.
  1. Learn its ways (v. 7-8)
7  Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, 8  she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.

  1. Value your time (v. 9-11)
9  How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10  A little sleep, a little slumber,  a little folding of the hands to rest, 11  and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12

TAKEAWAYS: How can we apply this to our lives? By seeing that
  • Work-ethic uncovers our beliefs
  • Effectiveness is better than efficiency
  • Your work has an eternal impact
“Everyone will be forgotten, nothing we do will make any difference, and all good endeavors, even the best, will come to naught. Unless there is God. If the God of the Bible exists, and there is a True Reality beneath and behind this one, and this life is not the only life, then every good endeavor, even the simplest ones, pursued in response to God’s calling, can matter forever.” ― Timothy Keller

  • Jesus confronts and heals our brokenness
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”  John 5:1-17
